IND v PAK, Asia Cup 2008: Sehwag powers India to 6 wicket win against Pakistan

Familiar Pakistan nemesis Virender Sehwag (119) slammed a violent century while Suresh Raina (84) too matched his aggression as India cantered to a facile six-wicket win with 7.5 overs to spare against the arch-rivals in the Asia Cup cricket tournament at Karachi.
It was sweet revenge for the Indians who just two weeks ago were outclassed by Pakistan in the Kitply tri-series final in Dhaka. With Sehwag and Raina on fire, India cruised to 301 for four in only 42.1 overs after Pakistan appeared to have set a competitive target by making 299 for four.
The hosts' innings revolved around 125 from captain Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan's 59 on a good batting track. Malik didn't field after retiring with cramps while pacer Umar Gul also went off with a rib cage injury after sending down just 1.2 overs.
But under lights, Sehwag showed just how good the track was when he savaged the attack scoring his ninth hundred. He and Raina put on a record 198 runs for the second wicket from 149 balls before the stand was broken in the 28th over.
The stand was remarkable as it came after Pakistan's stand in captain Misbah-ul-Haq had brought off a spectacular one-handed catch at wide slip to get rid of Gautam Ghambir (9) in the third over and the players were on a high.

Umer Gul took four wickets as Pakistan avenged its lopsided defeat in the league round with a 25-run victory over India in Saturday's final of the limited-overs tri-series.
Salman Butt and Younis Khan scored centuries and shared a 205-run second-wicket stand to guide Pakistan to 315 for three and then Gul and the bowlers did the rest, dismissing India for 290 in the penultimate over at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National stadium. India, which beat Bangladesh in its first match and Pakistan by 140 runs on Thursday, struggled early in the reply after losing opener Virendra Sehwag (2) in the second over.
Gautam Gambhir scored 40 before he was caught by substitute fielder Nasir Jamshed of a Gul delivery. Rohit Sharma (24), Yusuf Pathan (25) and Suresh Raina (24) failed to convert starts into a big innings and allrounder Shahid Afridi ended the innings of both of India's top scorers.
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a defiant 64 until he was out in the 48th over, caught by Jamshed off Afridi's bowling. Afridi had earlier dismissed Yuvraj Singh for 56 and returned 2-56 from 9.2 overs. Gul, who also bowled out Piyush Chawla (2) and trapped Praveen Kumar (5) lbw, finished with 4-57 in nine overs.
"It's a big victory, a final and that against India," Gul said. "It was a do or die battle for us." Pakistan started positively after winning the toss. Butt made the most of an early reprieve — dropped at short cover in the 11th over — to hit 10 boundaries in his 129 before retiring hurt near the end of the innings. "It was a perfect team job and it could not have been scripted better," Butt said. "I won an important game for my country, nothing gets better."
Khan stroked seven boundaries and three sixes, scoring 108 off 99 balls before he was caught by Sehwag off an Ishant Sharma delivery. It was a surprising loss for India, which won a recent series in Australia against the World Cup holders and is third in the ODI world rankings.

India posted their biggest ODI win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a 140-run victory in their triangular series match.
After scoring 330 for eight, India dismissed Pakistan for 190 to end their 12-match winning streak. India's previous highest victory over Pakistan was their 87-run win three years ago.
Gautam Gambhir (62), Virender Sehwag (89) and Yuvral Singh (55), the top three in the order, scored the majority of India's runs. Sehwag and Gambhir, who was dropped twice, put on 155 for the first wicket. Sehwag hit a six and 13 boundaries from 76 balls and Gambhir six fours from 62 balls while Singh faced 54 balls, hitting three sixes and three fours.
Pace bowler Praveen Kumar (four for 53) and 19-year-old leg-spinner Piyush Chawla (four for 40) bundled out Pakistan with 14.2 overs to spare.
Captain Shoaib Malik who scored 53, his 28th one-day half-century, was Pakistan's only successful batsman.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni led Team India has virtually captured every frontier in the recent past with Australia being its latest victim while arch-rival Pakistan is eager to extend its 12-match winning streak when the two sides lock horns in the second match of the tri-series.
Pakistan drubbed minnows Bangladesh by 70 runs here yesterday and its coach Geoff Lawson believes his team is capable of forcing India to surrender and that too by a bigger margin.
However, Lawson's Indian counterpart Gary Kirsten says his team is confident and its good run will continue the way it has in the recent past. Pakistan team, which is on a roll after winning 12 successive matches has its tails up. Its winning spree which started against India was followed by 11 wins but all of them came against minnows Bangladesh (6) and Zimbabwe (5).
Dhoni's boys would be eager to settle scores but a long 44-day Twenty20 tournament in IPL did not give them any breathing space before the triangular series here.
While Pakistani players were a sure shot flop in the recently concluded IPL, Sohail Tanvir stood out with his exceptional bowling efforts in the tournament and emerged the highest wicket-taker. His team would look up to him to provide some early wickets. In his side's victory against Bangladesh, Lawson was particularly pleased with an out-of-form Shahid Afridi's all-round effort. Afridi scored 20 runs off 17 balls and was spinning the bowl a great deal as he picked up three wickets in his eight overs conceding a mere 19 runs.

1983

India 1983 World Cup Champions
In the 1983 Prudential Cup, two-time World Champions West Indies tumbled underdogs India out for 183 and were cruising on their way to a memorable victory at 2-57 before suffering a major collapse. They were annihilated by the Indian bowlers and reached 6-76 before providing some sort of resistance. They were all out for 140, India won by 43 runs. The heroes of the day were Mohinder Amarnath (3/12 and 26) and Kris Srikkanth (top scorer with 38).
India had also beaten West Indies in the group stages, by 34 runs at Old Trafford. In another Group B match between India and Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells, India were struggling at 17/5. Kapil Dev stepped in and hit a majestic 175 not out, which at that time was the highest individual score in a ODI.
The physical trophy won by the Indian cricket team was damaged during a violent rampage on the Indian cricket board's headquarters, carried out by a mob.

This Mini-World Cup involving all of the seven Test match playing countries then was played to celebrate 150 years of the Australian state of Victoria.
In the final Sunil Gavaskar's India restricted Pakistan to a score of 176-9 of 50 overs thanks to their bowling attack lead by Kapil Dev and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan. India went on to victory in Melbourne scoring 177-2 in 44 overs.
Ravi Shastri was elected the Champion of Champions for his all-round performance. This was the only instance of the World Championship of Cricket.

Imran and Javed Miandad shared a third-wicket partnership of 139 that set Pakistan back on the right track. And their innings finished with a flourish when Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 42 off 35 balls with Wasim Akram chipping in with a quickfire 33 off only 19. And Wasim was soon in the action with the ball, dismissing Ian Botham for a duck in the first over of England's innings. The left-armer's next wickets settled the match. When he clean bowled Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis in consecutive balls, England were 141 for six with the run-rate climbing.
In the group stage matches India beat Pakistan by 43 runs.

Pakistan, who had played exciting cricket throughout the tournament, never found their form when it mattered most and the match was over in less than four-and-a-half hours, the shortest final in World Cup history. Wasim Akram won the toss and elected to bat, but his decision back-fired and none of his batsmen ever got to grips with either the wicket or the bowlers. Steve Waugh's men were given the perfect start by Adam Gilchrist who reached his fifty off 33 balls and they needed only 121 balls to reach the 133 runs needed for victory.
In the Super Six stage India beat Pakistan by 47 runs.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly top scored for India with 117, helped along by his opening partner Sachin Tendulkar who made 69. Scott Styris took two wickets for New Zealand as well as affecting a couple of run outs. New Zealand were stuggling in their chase at 5 for 132 when Chris Harris joined Chris Cairns at the crease. The pair put on 122 together until Harris fell for 46 with 9 balls remaining. Cairns however saw his side home, his unbeaten 102 giving his side victory with 2 balls to spare.

The final between India and Sri Lanka was washed out twice to leave no result. Consequently, the ICC Champions Trophy for the year 2002 was jointly awarded to India and Sri Lanka.

In the 2003 finals, Australia dominated from the very start, achieving 105 runs in 14 overs before losing a single wicket. Ricky Ponting (140 from 121 balls), and Damien Martyn (88 from 84 balls) took Australia to an Australian record 359, a record that would not be beaten until 2006. India never stood a chance after Sachin Tendulkar lost his wicket for just 4. Virender Sehwag (82 from 81 balls, 10 fours, 3 sixes) and Rahul Dravid (47 from 57 balls, 2 fours) brought India to a respectable 234 in 39.2 overs, but the rest of middle order collapsed spectacularly and India were all out. India lost only two matches in the entire World Cup, both of those being to champions Australia.

India's World Cup Victory in 1983

The 1983 Prudential World Cup in England was a turning point in the history of cricket and for the Indian Subcontinent. The West Indies, India, Australia, and the newcomers Zimbabwe contested the B group, and it got off to a rousing start when India with only one World cup win to this point beat the favourites, the West Indies, by 34 runs. They along with their neighbours, Pakistan, reached the semi-finals for the first time, bringing the spirit of the subcontinent into the world arena for the first time. Though Pakistan lost to West Indies, India beat the then world champions in the final to bring the trophy to Asia for the first time.

Binny with 18 (still a record for most wickets in a World Cup tournament), and Madan Lal with 17 wickets were their leading bowlers, and Kapil Dev topped the batting averages. Kapil's Kapil Dev 175* against Zimbabwe still remains one of the most astonishing comebacks in a cricket match.

Pakistan's World Cup Victory in 1992

The 1987 World Cup in India and Pakistan was disastrous for both the countries as they lost in their semifinal matches held in their respective countries. Despite Australia's (the 1987 champions) failure to reach the final of the 1992 Benson & Hedges Cricket Championships, a record World Cup final crowd of more than 85,000 greeted Pakistan and England at the MCG.

Before the finals, a supreme effort from Inzamam-ul-Haq (60 off only 37 balls) aginst New Zealand secured Pakistan's place in the 1992 World Cup final. Pakistan's greatest moment in World Cup history came in 1992 with victory in Australia. After a slow start they built as a team over the course of the competition, winning as other more fancied opponents slipped by the wayside. They beat a tired and beleaguered England in the final with ease.
