Chance for India to take second spot, Inzi aims to level series in his 100th Test

The third and final Test between India and Pakistan, starting here tomorrow, could be John Wrights final assignment as Indias coach as the New Zealander has already informed the cricket board about his decision to quit, BCCI secretary S K Nair said today.
Nair said the board would interact with Wright during the one-day series before taking a decision on appointment of another coach. We would have a dialogue with him and find out from him. If he still says that he does not want to continue, BCCI would go ahead and appoint a suitable candidate as the coach. India will climb to second place in the LG ICC Test championship for the first time if it wins the third and final Test match against Pakistan starting in Bangalore on Thursday. India has never been higher than its current third place in the official LG ICC Test table since it was launched in May 2001 but a 2-0 series win will be enough to see it leapfrog England into second.
Victory by two clear Test matches would boost Indias rating to 111, an increase of four points and, crucially, one higher than England which has held second spot since August 2004. Although India hold a lead in the Test series against Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly says his team wont be playing for a draw. India skipper Sourav Ganguly says his team will not be tempted to bat out for a draw in the final Test against Pakistan, starting on Thursday. There is also the added incentive for India to win, as they could overtake England in the Test table. Victory would be enough to go second, a draw would not.
The venue for the third and final test is in Bangalore, where a grassless wicket has been prepared. Batting is expected to be easy for the first half of the game, with the spinners having more of a say on the final two days. Trailing India by a Test and with only a draw to play for, skipper Inzamam Ul Haq must have hoped his 100th Test didnt have so much at stake.
Of course he dismisses the threat to his captaincy but deep down he knows that a defeat to India always hurts the captain more than anything else in Pakistan cricket. Inzamam however doesnt need to worry about his batting, that pressure is telling on his counterpart Sourav Ganguly, who is questioned about his poor form at every press conference. His reputation is less than stellar right now. A win at Kolkata have blunted the knives that were out, but it is a brief reprieve. He will have to come good with the bat here.

Bangalore Test First Day

Inzamam leads from the front

Inzamam-ul Haq celebrated his centenary Test with a grand hundred as Pakistan compiled a strong total in their bid for a series-levelling victory against India in the third and final cricket Test. Inzamam, playing in his 100th Test, slammed an unbeaten 184 to help Pakistan reach a commanding 323 for two on the opening day of the decider at the Chinnaswamy stadium. The 35-year-old burly batsman, only the fourth Pakistani to play in 100 or more Tests, became the fifth player ever to register a century in the milestone match.
Lending him solid support was his deputy Younis Khan with a back-to-back hundred of his own and by stumps was undismissed on 127. It was a day of run glut as the duo built up a mammoth third-wicket stand of 316 runs from 524 balls .
The loss of two openers inside the third over at the start turned out to be a mere blip in the radar. And once the floodgates opened, the Indians were swept away by the run deluge. Bangalore Test Second Day

Younis Khan's 267 helps Pakistan make 570

Younis Khan's marathon innings of 267 was finally ended as Pakistan were all out for 570 on day two of the final Test against India in Bangalore. India had 10 overs to bat out in the final session and eased to 55-0.
But they have plenty to do to draw the game and win the series after Younis became the sixth Pakistani to pass 250, batting for more than 11 hours. He was eventually caught off Harbhajan Singh, who was the pick of the Indian bowlers and claimed figures of 6-152.
Lakshmipathy made the early breakthrough, however, trapping captain Inzamam-ul-Haq with a good-length ball that darted in off the seam. In Picture: Two boundaries off leg-spinner Kumble took Younis' highest Test score past the 200 mark and extended his record total for the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Bangalore Test Third Day

Opener Virender Sehwag hit a swashbuckling 201 but Pakistan hung on to reduce India to 379 for six on the third day of the final test on Saturday. The hosts, cruising at 337 for three earlier in the day, closed still 191 behind Pakistan's mammoth first-innings 570 on a wicket starting to take spin.
Sehwag, dropped on 43, hit 28 fours and two big sixes over long on in his 262-ball knock.
The 26-year-old looked in complete control, putting on 98 for the opening wicket with Gautam Gambhir (24), 74 with Rahul Dravid (16), 85 with Sachin Tendulkar (41) and 80 for the fourth with Vangipurappu Laxman (51 not out).
He reached 3,000 test runs, becoming the fastest Indian to the milestone, when he got to 160 with a single to square-leg. Sehwag celebrated his second double-century in tests, off 260 deliveries, with a couple to extra-cover.
Leg spinner Kaneria had him caught and bowled soon after and then had captain Saurav Ganguly (1) stumped with a googly to give Pakistan the upper hand. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who scored a career-best 93 in the second test in Calcutta, fell for 10, leaving Laxman at the crease as the last recognised batsman. Bangalore Test Fourth Day

Pakistan set up a potentially enthralling final day of the third and final Test in Bangalore after setting India 383 for victory. India ended a day dominated by their rivals on 25-0, after Pakistan had declared on 261-2. Shahid Afridi hit 58 off 34 balls, while Yasir Hameed (77) and Younis Khan (84 not out) both scored more steadily for their fifties in a 92-run stand.
Only two teams have ever successfully chased more than 250 runs batting last in a Test in India, West Indies last achieving the feat in 1987. And no team has ever scored more than 364 in a fourth innings in India.
India started day four on 379-6 but added just 70 runs to their overnight score, Danish Kaneria claiming his 10th five-wicket haul. Three early wickets fell for 10 runs, with Kaneria (5-127) removing Harbhajan Singh and Lakshmipathy Balaji. But VVS Laxman (79 not out) and Anil Kumble put on 53 for the last wicket before the latter was bowled by Afridi. Bangalore Test Fifth Day

Pakistan defeated India by 168 runs in the third and final cricket Test in Bangalore on Monday to level the series 1-1. India were shot out for 214 just before close of play on the fifth day at the Chinnaswamy stadium.
Shahid Afridi claimed three wickets, while Mohammad Sami, Arshad Khan and Danish Kaneria bagged two wickets each to provide a thrilling finish to the highly competitive series.
India had won the second Test in Calcutta by 195 runs after the first Test in Mohali was drawn.

The Venue

The splendid 25-year-old M.Chinnaswamy Stadium is located in serene, scenic settings, right in the heart of Bangalore city, flanked by the lovely Cubbon Park on one side and M. G. Road on the other. It boasts of a seating capacity of 50,000.
The stadium is home to Anil Kumble and Prasad.
Sunil Gavaskar played his final Test at Bangalore, in 1986-7, a match which Pakistan won by a whisker.
The highest individual score at the Chinnaswamy stadium is Sachin Tendulkar 's 177 against Australia in 1997-98.
