Sri Lanka invited to replace India

Pakistan have invited Sri Lanka to tour next year, filling the gap in the calendar created by India's recent cancellation of a proposed Test series.
The Indian government refused to sanction permission for India to travel to Pakistan for a series comprising of three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 international in January and February next year. The Pakistan Cricket Board, who had already discussed the possibility of Sri Lanka stepping in to bridge the gap should India refuse to tour, wasted no time in sending a formal invite to Sri Lanka.
"India's withdrawal is disappointing for us but we were expecting this," PCB chief operating officer Salim Altaf said. "We have sent an invitation to Sri Lanka to play three Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 game.
"Pakistan has gone without Test cricket for more than a year now and we are desperate to have international cricket at home. "The Sri Lankan board should hopefully accept our invitation."
Confirming receipt of the invitation Sri Lanka Cricket chairman Arjuna Ranatunga said they had assured Pakistan of their support. "The PCB have official contacted us and we have assured them of our fullest support," Ranatunga said. "We have agreed to play in Pakistan and have not demanded huge financial guarantees.
"As for security concerns, we were very pleased with the security arrangements made during the Asia Cup. "India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have always worked closely together and we wish to ensure that good relationship is maintained. "It will be an exciting series."
The Sri Lankan team is currently away in Bangladesh where they are due to play two Tests and a triangular one-day series also involving Zimbabwe. India's tour of Pakistan was due to begin with the first Test in Karachi on January 13, but Sri Lanka can only travel to Pakistan only after January 16 when the tri-nation one-day series ends in Bangladesh.

India calls off Pakistan tour

India have called off next month’s cricket tour of Pakistan, the government refusing permission amid simmering tension between the two neighbours.
“We have received a letter from the government that the tour is not feasible under the prevailing circumstances,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said on Thursday. A senior Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said an official invitation had already been sent to Sri Lanka to play three tests, three one-dayers and a Twenty20 match to replace the cancelled tour.
“It is disappointing for us but we were expecting this,” PCB chief operating officer Salim Altaf told reporters in Lahore. An International Cricket Council (ICC) spokesman said it was too early to say whether India’s decision could hurt the World Cup.
“It is far too ahead to speculate on that,” he said. “We are putting all plans in place and look forward to a very successful event.” Any hopes of the Jan 13-Feb 19 tour going ahead seemed to disappear when federal sports minister Manohar Singh Gill opposed the trip earlier this month. “The situation is tense...better to allow some time for tempers to cool down a bit and take another look at it in a few months.”
International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said last week: “If the government determines that you can’t go and tour, we’ve got to respect that. That’s the government’s decision and there is nothing that the ICC can do against that.”

India's tour of Pakistan likely to be called off

After the chilling terror attacks on Mumbai's landmark hotels that stretched for 3 days from the 26th of November 2008, the BCCI is being forced to consider the cancellation of India's upcoming cricket tour or Pakistan.
While Mumbai, India and the indeed the world are reeling from the barbaric terror acts that lead to over 200 deaths, India's tour of Pakistan is likely to be the next casualty.
India was slated to play on Pakistan soil in the coming weeks. BCCI chief and senior officials maintain that the BCCI has no objection to the tour going ahead per se but cannot allow the safety of the cricketers lives to be jeopardized in any way. In the current scenario, even the possibility of the tour being played on a neutral third party country is likey to be ruled out.
However, a formal decision is yet to be made and is likely to be announced in the next few days.

Rawalpindi to host India Test

Rawalpindi will host its first cricket Test in more than four years when India tours Pakistan in January.
India will play Pakistan in the second Test and third limited-overs match of the series at Rawalpindi, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board's tour itinerary released Tuesday. India played Pakistan the last time Rawalpindi hosted a Test match in April 2004.
Former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated at Rawalpindi in December, and the city has been the scene of several violent incidents in past years. The city is also located near the federal capital Islamabad where at least 53 people died after a powerful blast at the Marriott Hotel on Saturday. "As of now Rawalpindi is the venue," PCB spokesman Mansoor Suhail said, adding that the schedule was finalized before the Marriott blast.
The Indian team arrives in Pakistan on Jan. 4 and is scheduled to play a three-day warm-up match at Hyderabad before the first Test at Karachi. Lahore will host the third and final Test starting Jan. 29. The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was extensively renovated for the Champions Trophy before being excluded as one of the limited-overs tournament's three venues. The Champions Trophy was eventually postponed for a year due to security concerns held by the participating teams.

IND v PAK, Asia Cup 2008: Younis brilliant unbeaten century takes Pakistan home

Younis Khan hit for a century and an under-strength Pakistan beat India by eight wickets Wednesday to revive its hopes of reaching the Asia Cup final.
Younis hit an unbeaten 123 off 117 balls and stand-in captain Misbah-ul-Haq scored an undefeated 70 off 62 deliveries, enabling Pakistan to reach the 309-run target in 45.3 overs for the loss of two wickets.
Earlier, Pakistan's second-choice bowlers restricted India to 308 for seven from its 50 overs on a flat batting wicket with fast bowler Rao Iftikhar taking three for 51. Younis hit 11 fours and a six and, together with Misbah, shared a match-winning 144-run unbeaten third-wicket stand off 123 deliveries.
Playing in his 174th one-day international, Younis also became the ninth Pakistani batsmen to score 5,000 runs when he pulled leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for a boundary and reached 37.
The result left India requiring to beat defending champion Sri Lanka on Thursday to assure itself of qualifying for the final. Pakistan, which lost to India by six wickets in the group stage, faces Bangladesh in its Super Four game Friday and if India loses Thursday, the home team could qualify for the July 6 final against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan's World Cup Victory in 1992

The 1987 World Cup in India and Pakistan was disastrous for both the countries as they lost in their semifinal matches held in their respective countries. Despite Australia's (the 1987 champions) failure to reach the final of the 1992 Benson & Hedges Cricket Championships, a record World Cup final crowd of more than 85,000 greeted Pakistan and England at the MCG. Before the finals, a supreme effort from Inzamam-ul-Haq (60 off only 37 balls) aginst New Zealand secured Pakistan's place in the 1992 World Cup final. Pakistan's greatest moment in World Cup history came in 1992 with victory in Australia. After a slow start they built as a team over the course of the competition, winning as other more fancied opponents slipped by the wayside.
